Green Heron Woodworks was founded by longtime friends Kevin Faucheux and Mike Robertshaw in 2008. As designers, carpenters, and artists, Kevin and Mike strive to do the creative work they love while giving new life to salvaged lumber that once formed the foundations of old New Orleans.
Green Heron Woodworks celebrates Louisiana's rich culture and history through the adaptive re-use of the antique cypress, bargeboard, and heart pine lumber that makes their handcrafted furniture, frames, and figurines unique. It also reflects its craftsmen’s commitment to principles of environmental stewardship that are central to their love of working with wood.
Kevin Faucheux grew up surrounded by the furniture his father built. The family moved frequently throughout his father’s career and Kevin was introduced to a variety of woodworking tools and hobby shops that served as his father’s workshop.
Today, nearly forty years later, the furniture still remains solid, functional, and (less a few pieces, thanks to Katrina) testament to honest design and good craftsmanship. Having inherited his father’s creativity and his mother’s eye for painting and craft, Kevin attended Virginia Commonweath University to study printmaking but found himself more drawn to the woodworking classes taught by Carl Burkheimer.
After years of school and summers spent on construction sites, Kevin chose to recover from institutional education by taking some time just to go fishing. Ten years and many fish later, Kevin turned from his time as a professional fly-fishing guide and sportsman in Hawaii to the family’s home city of New Orleans in 2006. With his new bride in tow and much work to be done, he began in renovation carpentry work, which supplied both the lumber and inspiration for some earlier works. Upon his buddy Mike’s arrival in New Orleans, they joined their creative energies to form Green Heron Woodworks and pursue their craft full time.
Mike Robertshaw came to New Orleans in 2008 and helped launch Green Heron Woodworks with his lifelong friend Kevin Faucheux. Before moving to Louisiana, Mike spent two years working as a carpenter in Vermont. It was during this time that he first developed his love for working with his hands, as well as his appreciation for the antique wood that is so often lost during the demolition or renovation of old homes.
Applying the business and interpersonal skills he developed through years of campaigning for effective environmental stewardship, Mike brings a balance of passion and pragmatism to the partnership. In designing one-of-a-kind pieces built from materials found largely at construction sites around his newly adopted city, Mike maintains the philosophy that each piece of recycled and antique wood has a story to tell and strives to reflect uniqueness, simplicity, and classic beauty in each of his creations.
Green Heron Woodworks is the result of the combined energies of these two exceptional craftsmen and brings to New Orleans functional, handcrafted works of art that can be enjoyed and celebrated in every day living.
