Artist Statement:
Art is my survival mechanism: transforming my perception of reality, fostering introspection, and conjuring the spirit. With joy and compassion, I seek to reveal hidden truths that have become lost in the secular haze of modern life. Sensing the need for emotional rejuvenation, I wish to create a sanctuary where the viewer can retreat from the sometimes puzzling, chaotic world. By creating a visual footprint of my inner psyche, I seek to allow the viewer to find solace in the freedom of artistic creation. Frenetic lines juxtaposed with fields of color create movement, releasing blocked energy, and promoting spiritual uplift. Through sharing the painted expression of my own path, I aim to inspire the viewer to ignite his or her own journey of self-discovery, and meaning.
Artist Bio:
Growing up in the suburbs of Metairie, Louisiana, I was fortunate to have nurturing parents who gave me plenty of paper and crayons. Filling up sketchbooks with my imagination was my favorite pastime. As a very quiet child, I learned early on that art could speak louder than words, and serve as means of communication with my friends, family, and society as a whole.
I graduated from Tulane University in 2005 with a BA in Art Studio: Painting & Drawing. While attending Tulane I studied under the artists Sandy Chism, Ronna Harris, and Matteo Neivert. My last semester of college occurred during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, where I studied at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. Though unaware at the time, I had internalized the trauma of the devastation, and was stripped of my creative outlets. Fortunately, I was met with great compassion and was given my own personal space to paint on campus. Studying under the artist Lorraine Tady, I was encouraged to paint with steadfast speed on a much larger scale. I also became fascinated with the Abstract Expressionists, especially the works of Ida Kohlmeyer and Mark Rothko. Their bold use of the simple elements of line, shape, and color to create powerful, poignant compositions struck a cord with my imagination. I felt the freedom to paint without inhibition, and find my individual voice like I never had before.
I am continually drawn to all things creative, artistic, and powerful. Besides painting, I spend my time cooking, playing bass guitar, and watching films with my wife Alicia.
