I am a self-taught artist (with the exception of Mr. Anderson; the Art
Teacher at Iowa Valley High School). My art is very conceptual in nature
but once I engage the medium the process takes precedence. Above all,
the work I produce is a means of spiritual expression. My influences are
many; my formative years in rural Iowa, from which I gained an
appreciation for the colors and textures of the natural world; the
patterns and shapes of expressionists like Klimt, the varieties of
techniques used by contemporary artists I represented during my years as
a gallery owner, and an appreciation for “fine things” given me by my
late partner; Larry Potts. My goal is to combine these sensibilities,
using a minimum of lines and shapes with a limited palate, in order to
evoke a sense of place or feeling.
AUTUMN GEMS
Autumn Gems is a series of mixed media paintings inspired by the
birthstones associated with the months of Fall. (Of course, pearls are
always appropriate.) They utilize acrylic paint on either board or
canvas combined with pen and, in some cases, metal and semi-precious
stones. They are created to be something special for your wall to wear.
