Ceramic Pillow Installation by Dawn ChatoneyDawn Chatoney: Bang It

Clay as An Extension of Self:

I feel compelled, in fact, bound to be a ceramic artist, because when creating in clay I experience a profound sense of purpose. Using clay I am free to touch the core of meaning, see the essence of coherence, smell the basic elements of being, while hearing the voice inside me that is alive and relevant.

As a material, clay is soft and malleable when wet, hard and fragile when dry, and when it is fired in a kiln, clay becomes indelible. Much like life, the alchemy of clay in its original state is a vulnerable and fragile process. Though once it is fired into stone and glass, no element on earth can corrode or destroy it. Hence, a sense of purpose in my work as an extension of every part of my life becomes symbolically cemented in the material's strength.

The process of using clay to engage the senses is an exercise of reflection and evolved understanding. As physical and focused as my art necessarily is, it requires me to be present, melding reality with imagination and vision, giving license to the “ordinary”. In effect, the truth that originates within me is materialized externally through my discipline.
