I
do what I do because I like exploring the techniques of metal
smithing. I like the idea of using ancient techniques to make extremely
contemporary objects. It makes me feel grounded that I can create with
my hands. It calms me in a time when our lives are filled with false
internet friendships and mass produced knick knacks. I’m rebelling from
the commercialization of my craft as it becomes more commercialized.
Many of my decisions are based on the dangerous possibilities that arise
when taking traditional thoughts or rules about metal work or color and
bending them or even rejecting them.
Like many artists, the materials I choose represent the social and
economic times we are living in. I choose materials that are readily
available and usually can be repurposed from something else. Copper
from a roof has the possibilities of becoming the choker for the most
magical tea party.
